Seven years ago, God commissioned me to step away from a lucrative sales career and to follow Him by doing the work of an evangelist. I'd love to say my journey has been filled with ease and comfort instead God has shaken everything I could possibly take comfort in, except for in Him.
The truth is, in our journey of faith, we will face a crossroad where circumstances challenge the core of our beliefs.
But, do NOT be afraid. God is persistent. He never leaves us. He carries us. He is faithful. And, at just the right moment, He reveals Himself to us personally!
In the gospel of John 20:11-18 we read: "Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher)." (NIV)
Can you imagine Mary's crossroad? She believed Christ to be the Messiah...but circumstances assaulted her beliefs. She witnessed Jesus' death. She stood at the cross as He breathed His last breath. And, now, at the tomb...she faced the horrific revelation Jesus' body was missing.
Ever been there? Ever wonder, where is Jesus? Ever face the crisis of God not delivering as you expected? Or experienced that place where you just knew God was going to show up and show off...only to feel abandoned at the tomb of dead dreams? Ever wept like Mary and in complete despair shouted...I don't know where my Savior is...
Friend, you are NOT alone! Jesus is near. He is speaking to you. What I find fascinating is that Mary didn't recognize Jesus when He first spoke to her; she thought He was the gardener.
Oh, how I can relate. Sometimes, in my distress, I have missed God. I couldn't see Him or recognize Him. But, I love that Jesus doesn't get deterred.
God presses in past all our disbelief and disillusionment and calls us by name, just like He did Mary.
"Jesus said to her, "Mary." He called her by name.
Friend, God is that personal. He whispers our name. He comforts. He fulfills. He is near.
Today, as I cried out to the Lord...I felt His gentle reminder from Isaiah 43:1-3. I pray it comforts you, too: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior." (NIV)
As we hear God speak our name, may our response be Rabboni (which means Teacher)... Let's allow Christ to teach us, instruct us, and lead us. Listen carefully, I think I hear Him calling our name.
Julie - I remember when you and Greg were in that lucrative sales career. I also know that the work you've done since then is yielding much higher returns and benefits. Your posting today is an excellent reminder to us all to keep our focus on the eternal and trust that our Savior is there for us even when we sometimes can't see him. Thank you for your dedication and service.
