A Reminder From Hurricane Isaac

Ever feel powerless? Ever get reminded of just how small you actually are?

Hurricane Issac took out our power for a brief moment last night. I watched as the palm trees in our back yard bowed low as the opposing winds blew against them and was reminded of how very small I actually am.

It was liberating to realize "I'm not God." Oh, don't worry. I have never cognitively confused my life with God's....but sometimes I live as if the weight of the world and the outcome of success relied on me.

How about you? Can you relate?

As I watched the storm blow in, I was reminded of a statement Rick Warren once said (paraphrased): "We do not choose when or where the wave starts, or how long it lasts, we simply get to enjoy the privilege of riding the wave."

Friends, GOD has a GREAT purpose for YOUR life. He hand selected you to parent your children. He positioned you in your current place of business. He guides your steps and leads you in your current ministry. He has a PLAN!

God simply calls us to surrender our all for all of Him. He invites us to participate with Him by humbling ourselves before Him and aligning our steps to obediently follow where HE leads.

James 4:10 encourages us to "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." (NIV)

So, what is humility? What does it mean to humble ourselves before the Lord?

In his book, Humility, Andrew Murray wrote: "In God's presence, humility is not a posture we assume for a time--when we think of Him or pray to Him--but the very spirit of our life...It is in our most unguarded moments that we truly show who we are and what we are made of." (Andrew Murray)

I couldn't agree more.

  • The essence of humility is found in the submissive prayer, not my will but thy will be done.
  • The evidence of our response (to God's call of humility) echoes through the demonstration of our faithful and willing steps of obedience (or the lack thereof.)
  • The foundation of humility derives from our foundational understanding that GOD should be trusted above our intellect, reason, and power. He alone is God.
Well, I'm rambling...I guess what I'm trying to write is that last night's storm reminded me: I cannot comprehend all the mysteries of the universe. I certainly can't begin to understand the power of my Heavenly Father. BUT...I can trust Him. I know He is real and He is good.

Today, He invites us to trust and  faithfully follow Him, the One Who created all things by the power of His Word.
