At 5:55 AM, a strange sound awakened me. Poof. Blourp. Boooh. Bllorrp.
Hard to actually describe the noise but I was certain of a computer malfunction. I sleepily walked to my mother's living room to check on our video-editor's computer.
(Long story there but I'll simplify to say...while visiting Ft.Wayne to work with FYI's video-editor this last week, inclement weather knocked out the power to over 1/3 of Allen County's residents and we were forced to move office equipment to my family's home in order to be able to edit. Whew. Crazy.)
As I sleepily hurried to make sure the computer was OK, I heard the noise again. Bhoof. Chirlrp.
The sound was actually coming from behind me. What in the world is going on? I thought.
As I walked to another small adjoining room, I laughed in surprise to a little red robin literally ramming his body into the my mom's small octagon bathroom window.
Poof. Blourp. Feathers ruffled as the little bird once again slammed his body against the transparent glass. As I approached the window pane, the little bird's eyes met with mine causing him to quickly cease from his senseless mission.
I giggled to myself, thinking, What in the world is the matter with this bird? Is it trying to come inside? Is it fighting senselessly with its own reflection?
As I pondered the little birds flight, I couldn't help but think of my own senseless missions. Those moments where I try desperately to open doors of opportunity that God is determined to keep closed. Those moments when I fight against my own reflection and meander in senseless what ifs or if onlys.
In moments like these, I can honestly say the only thing that saves me from my own demise is when my eyes meet with the eyes of my Savior, spiritually.
Jesus offers each one of us freedom. In Matthew 11:28-30, He invites us saying, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (NIV)
No matter your problem, no matter your struggle, He is near. So, how about it? Are you knocking yourself silly fighting against the
reflection of your limitations? Do you attempt to push down doors by
brute force? Are you struggling? Disoriented? Are your feathers ruffled?
If so, take a moment to connect with God. Just a glimpse of Him can keep us from knocking ourselves silly.
