Hope Is Coming!

Have you ever watched beauty pageants? I sure did, especially as a kid. I loved the triumphant moment, after the anticipation dissipated upon the announcement of the declared winner. How as the crown was placed upon the head of the new reigning queen, tears burst forth.

I love moments where dreams come true. Hope is answered. And, victory is obtained. Where aspirations are evident...that moment where what was only a distant dream becomes reality.

This morning, as I ventured through my normal day to day routine, I listened to my favorite song...I Will Rise, by Chris Tomlin.

Tears burst from my eyes, upon hearing the lyrics, "There's a day that's drawing near, when this darkness turns to light, the shadows disappear, and my faith shall be my eyes..."

Faith overwhelmed my circumstances. Strength grew despite my weakness. As the truth of what I hope for settled in my soul. Friends, there is a hope far glorious than any beauty pageant aspiration...far greater than worldly wealth or successful accomplishment...ONE DAY...we will see the evidence of our faith...darkness will turn to light...all shadows...death...pain...suffering...disappointments...will disappear and our faith will be our eyes. We will see JESUS!

The Apostle Paul urges in 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." (NIV)

Today, once again, I am resolved to run after GOD and HIM alone. To pursue Him. To follow where He leads. To relinquish my plans in exchange for His. To NOT get caught up in ideologies of success but to remain obedient, trusting GOD NO MATTER WHAT.

We are NOT alone. God will never leave us or forsake us. Hold fast to His promise found in Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (NIV)

Take time to remember WHO it is you serve...WHO it is you believe in...and in light of that...stand firm and be encouraged, remembering...no matter your difficulty...no matter your obstacle...YOUR STORY isn't finished yet.

Until next week, I'm Julie Gorman, reminding you to dream big, laugh often, knowing God's got it all under control. :)

Define and Maintain Your Vision

Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." (KJV)

When it comes to vision, we've all heard the old cliche..."Aim at nothing and you will hit it." But the other day, a friend described a recent experience she had with a different kind of error in approach to vision..."Ready...FIRE...aim."

So where is the balance? Certainly God opens doors no man can shut and shuts doors no man can open...But, isn't it also true that God calls us to participate in life? To involve him in our day to day decisions?

The truth is, when we aim at nothing, have no dreams, never involve God for our future...we meander through life feeling unfulfilled, apathetic, and unfruitful. I know...because I've done this in my own life...I've been guilty of simply getting the next thing done, until I felt an overwhelming sense urging me...something hads to change...and couldn't continue living without purpose.

I've also been guilty of the concept my friend alluded to...the "ready...FIRE...aim syndrome". I anxiously pursued lofty dreams without calculating the cost. I've filled my life with busy activity only to realize how I thought God's vision would look was completely different and had to realign.

Proverbs 16:9 says, "In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps." (NIV)

And Proverbs 3:5-6 offers us the heart when defining our vision, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." (NIV)

Here are three simple helpful hints to define and maintain our vision:
  1. The heart of defining our vision must originate with God. A simple prayer that works every time is, Lord, help. Show me what you want for my life. And then pay attention because God is about to answer. He uses the word of God to communicate. As you read scripture He causes verses to stand out and move our thoughts and emotions. He'll uses people to confirm our gifts so pay attention to the affirmations people give concerning your gifts. He also uses our circumstances (opening and closing doors of opportunity). No need to get frustrated by a closed door...I thank God for the closed doors that kept me from experiencing pain and the ones that may have distracted me from maintaining my first love for Him...God's ways are truly higher and greater than my own.
  2. The heart of defining our vision must realign with God. One of the greatest truths I'm learning is that my vision must be submitted back to God daily. My experiences have taught me that things change. God doesn't always reveal each step from A to Z. Yet...a God-given vision will remain consistent. God called me to do the work of an evangelist...to bind up the broken-hearted...to empower and equip believers for ministry. That mission...that vision doesn't change...I KNOW my purpose. However, the means, the modes, and the methods of walking that out has varied and changed over the years.
  3. Finally, the heart of defining our vision must reside and stay consistent with God. I am so grateful for God's grace. When I make mistakes, He lovingly corrects. When I ignore...He pursues me with discipline to get my attention. The key to success is not measuring it by outcome but by obedience. We may NOT ALWAYS experience the FULL FRUITION of God's promise but by aligning our hearts each day with His Word, by filling our soul and mind with His character...we cannot fail. Our intimate relationship with God helps prevent disaster by our own doing.
Friend, without vision the people perish, without God's revelation we would all be in ruin...let's take time today to define our vision (our mission) and then submit our lives completely to God and realign our lives to maintain that mission.

PRAYER: Father fill us with wisdom. Direct our steps. And, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make it clear. In Jesus name, amen.

Press on In Your Faith

Sometimes I grow tired of trying to lasso the moon...Yet, my design compels me to believe BIG with God! Honestly, I just don't know how to live any other way. How about you? Ever grow weary from your journey of faith?

Trust me...you're not alone. I grow weary by circumstances, yet I'm learning to thank God for the impossibilities that help to rid me of my independance...after all...that is the true beginning of faith.

The other day my husband and I had a deep conversation about faith...what it is...what it is not! In America, our temptation is to reduce "Faith" to a trinket or a badge. We proudly say, "I'm a person of faith."

But what does that really mean? What are the implications of faith?

Honestly, faith is not faith until it costs us something...
  • Faith costs us our pride and demands our humility.
  • Faith requires our surrender of "self-sufficiency" and compels us to completely depend on God.
  • Faith relinquishes our rights and propels servant hood, first to God, second to others.
  • Faith requires hope and is only witnessed in hopeless situations.
  • Faith is believing for something that is not yet seen.
  • Faith surpasses the here and now, the concrete, the substantial of what we can see, hear, or touch trusts, and trusts in what exceeds the realm of the tangible.
  • By faith, we believe the truth of Who God is and hold fast to HIS promises, regardless of our experience or circumstances.
Friend, if you feel completely helpless, hopeless, or over-whelmed...you are a candidate of faith! The good news is God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. I want to encourage you to read Hebrews 11 today. The entire chapter will inspire your faith as it talks about Noah, Moses, Abraham and many others.

Hebrews 11:32-35, "And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again." (NIV)

In this passage...Every hero, every heroine, faced IMPOSSIBLE SITUATIONS but trusted God...some received their deliverance this side of eternity...some only welcomed it from afar...but each were commended by God for their FAITH.

Friend, I will not be so arrogant to attempt to try to explain the mysteries of God...why some people are healed...why some people are not...why some people receive great victories...while others eek out their existence in life...BUT WHAT I WILL HOLD FAST TO...is that GOD IS GOOD...HE IS FAITHFUL...and HE IS A REWARDER OF THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK AFTER HIM!

Today, I pray our faith grows strong. Our expectancy soars with the truth of WHO GOD IS. OUR HOPE is restored as we consider WHO it is we serve.

And humbly submit that we trust in God...Because He is GOOD. Remember Hebrew 11:5-6, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." (NIV)

Here's a quick reminder for those of us whose knees and soul are worn out from waiting:
  1. Remember Who God is...His character...His love.
  2. Remind yourself of what He promised...in His Word and in prayer.
  3. Rest in the truth that God fulfills all of His promises.
  4. Remain steadfast...when you've done all you know to do to stand...stand firm. (Eph. 6:14)
  5. Finally, RALLY forward...put one foot in front of the other...follow God's lead. He will not disappoint.

Time to De-clutter!

Ever get weighted down by busy-ness? The other day I felt so bogged down by all the clutter surrounding me, I decided to spend the majority of my day simply going through old files, email messages, and the ever growing stacks of Crayola drawn papers and notes from my kids.

Freedom soared with each useless discarded item. It felt fantastic to “DECLUTTER all the unimportant things from my sight and to file away and preserve what was important.”

Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” NIV

Friend, God has a purpose for each one of us. He formed us and set us apart for something specific. YOUR LIFE COUNTS! YOU really do matter.

So if you are feeling bogged down; weighted with busy activity…Take time to ask God what His purpose is.

I coach people often a simple 1-2-3 step to hearing God's direction and purpose.

1. Ask Him. OK, now that sounds really deep and profound, doesn't it? LOL. But the truth is, if you're like me, life can get really busy and before we know it we have mounds of responsibilities, endless "to do" lists, and forget to simply ask GOD..."What do you will for me to do this day?"

2. Align your life. After complete step 1, we have to remove "Busy" activity and all the things we've picked up that God never designed for our life. God will never tell us to do something contrary to His Word...so as we align our life it is important to make our decisions with God's character and commands (found in His Word).  Listen closely and then follow His lead. Remove old files of bitterness and regret, and preserve what is most important.

3. ACT NOW. Like the old Nike commercial..."Just do it." Live God's purpose right where you are. Don't wait for the someday...somewhere...somehow method of living. Live God's purpose where you are. Serve where you are. Demonstrate His love, mercy, grace, and presence right where you are. In a troubled marriage? Serve. Finances bottoming out? Trust and remain faithful with your tithe. Struggling with guilt, shame, or fear? Remember Who you serve and remember His promises. Abraham stepped out, not knowing where He was going; he never saw the full fulfillment of God's promise, but he welcomed it from afar and followed after God.

The truth is...We all need to do a spring cleaning now and again…and it always feels good when we do. So, ASK...ALIGN...and ACT NOW. After all, YOUR life counts. God said so in Jeremiah 1:5.

PURSUE GOD with ALL YOU GOT!

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith... (1 Peter 5:8-9, NIV)

"Really, God? Another morning of self-defeating voices...accusations of insignificance...heart palpitations...feelings of fear...doubt...insecurity? When will these tiresome struggles go away? When will I not have to battle inferior thoughts that resist the truth of Who You say I am?"

"What should I do? How do I overcome? It seems as though my built up faith constantly wavers, crumbles, cowers...only to have to build it up again? I am so tired of this incessant battle and raging war! Please give me the victory once and for all!!!"

That was the gist of my prayer, today! Some spiritual giant I turned out to be, I thought. I hushed my thoughts and silenced the stirring of my emotions and sat quietly, reflecting, asking for God's help.

"What do I need to do, God? Seriously? I am so tired and exhausted from this inner turmoil! Please Help!"

From the silence came the ever refreshing, comforting joy, of my Friend and God! A simple verse that silenced my rantings, (found in Deuteronomy 4:23) "Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you." (NIV)

God has a way of calming my fear. He restores my hope. He reminds me of the truth.

Friends, in this world we will have troubles. (John 16:33) BUT...we are not abandoned. OUR BATTLES... OUR STRUGGLES...and OUR WALK of FAITH will NEVER CEASE...BUT...NEITHER WILL THE COMPASSION AND LOVE OF OUR GOD! Jesus told us in this word we will have troubles, trials, and tribulations...BUT...HE also said...BE OF GOOD CHEER for "I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Today, I'd like to remind you, as GOD reminded me...

  1. DO NOT FORGET the covenant He has made.
  2. Remember WHO HE IS.
  3. HOLD FAST to His Promises!
God is near to us and has given us everything we need that pertains to life! (2 Peter 1:3) So keep on keepin' on! Keep on pressing on! Keep on resisting the enemy and pursue God with all you got! He will NOT disappoint!

PRAYER: Father, help the weary of heart today. Fill us with YOUR PEACE. Grant us the strength to stand firm. Thank You for YOUR promise that those who hope in YOU will NOT be disappointed. (Isaiah 49, 23)

Welcome the Cross

Today, incessant decisions regarding business...ministry...children...and an endless list of upcoming events plagued my mind.

What should I do? Is this Your will God? What do you desire from me? How should I...

I stuffed away each thought, thinking I need to focus on the incredible sacrifice Jesus endured for my salvation...but my thoughts were intermittently broken by all the incessant decisions needing made. Again I resisted...trying to stuff away the concerns...and simply focus on Jesus...

I wrestled back and forth and continued this cycle for quite some time, to NO AVAIL.

Suddenly, a thought occurred far greater than my own thinking...a simple verse provided my relief.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 says, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." (NIV)

Freinds, we do not overcome our struggles through worldly philosophy, business "strategies", or a 1-2-3 step to marketing. We overcome by involving Jesus in our life. Aligning our thoughts to His. Following His lead...not our own. Surrendering our strength and self-will to His Divine plan and perfect power.

2 Corinthians 10 reminded me to not stuff away my thoughts or concerns but to take them captive to the cross.

Self-defeating thoughts of This is impossible. I can't do this on my own. This is too big.  when taken captive to the cross reminds us that WE ARE NOT ALONE.

Failing or broken relationships leaving us thinking This relationship can never be restored. I will never forgive. There is never a chance of reconciliation. when submitted to the truth of the cross restores hope...If God can reconcile us as sinners to Himself...surely any relationship can be restored.

Thoughts concerning our needs, whether financial, emotional, mental, or physical...when brought in line with the truth of the cross breaks every binding weight of impossibilities and disparaging feeling of hopelessness.

Friends, we don't have to stuff away our feelings, concerns, needs, or desires...GOD invites us to bring them captive to the cross...to remember the GRAVE IS OVERWHELMED and OUR VICTORY IS WON.

We have a high priest who has been tested and tempted in every way...yet he overcame...and HE EVER LIVES to make intercession for us!

Let this truth pervade your every thought from Hebrews 7:24-25, "Jesus lives forever...Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them."

Right now, in Heaven, Jesus, Himself is interceding on your behalf. There is nothing too difficult. There is nothing too impossible. You are not alone. HIS GRACE is sufficient for our every weakness.

So, let's not try to stuff away our feelings in an attempt to handle them on our own (and some how think we are doing God a service) Rather let's take every concern directly to Him, knowing He cares for us. Let's submit our thoughts, feelings, emotions, needs, and surrender them to God. Let's live our life WITH HIM and take every thought captive to the truth of the cross.

The cross whispers Ask and you will receive forgiveness. You are loved. You will never be forsaken. You are not alone.

The cross demonstrates the height and depth of God's great love. A love that traversed through the trenches of our indifference and pride and nailed the weight of our sin to its death. Jesus stretched His arms wide and bore the weight of our sin to provide our hope...our life.

Today, as we celebrate Good Friday...let's take every thought captive to the cross! And as always remember to DREAM BIG...LAUGH OFTEN...KNOWING GOD'S GOT IT ALL UNDER CONTROL.

Remember His Great Love

Ever wonder what it was like, the Thursday before Jesus died? What was it like to recline at the table and share the passover with Him? How did each disciple feel watching Jesus kneel with a basin and towel and wash their feet?

I often see myself in the pages of God's Word. Judas who betrays. Peter who denies. Thomas who doubts and John, who lays back against Jesus' chest and simply soak in Who He is.

But today, what echoes in my mind is the abandonment Jesus demonstrated. In Matthew 26:51-54, after Peter cut off the high priest's servant's ear Jesus tells him to put away his sword and asks, "Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"  (NIV)

His prayer of Lord, take this cup from me...never the less not what I will, but Your will be done.

Why did He do this? Why didn't He call on the angels for deliverance? Why did he bear the weight of the cross? Why did He endure the mockings, whips, and the humiliation of hanging naked on the cross?

Friends, that kind of love and sacrifice can be trusted. I don't know what you are going through. And I know how dark this world can get. I know the weight of discouragement, helplessness, HOPELESSNESS. BUT...in light of the cross...we have hope. Because, as Hebrews 4:15-16 says, "we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." (NIV)

Today, I want to encourage you. In the midst of your struggles...In the midst of your despair...reflect on the great love God demonstrated to us through the cross. God knew we would have moments of great despair and demonstrated the depths of his love and commitment to us through the cross.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. So...as you take your concerns to Him in prayer today...remember...truly remember WHO IT IS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO...REMEMBER HIS GREAT LOVE!
PRAYER: Father demonstrate Your love for us today. Fill us with Hope. Move in our situations. Remind us of Your goodness and thank You for Your faithfulness. We abandon our lives for You. Thank You for never leaving us or forsaking us. Grant us Your favor. In Jesus name, amen.

A Little at a Time...

It's not very often that I do this...as a matter of fact in the last year I've only re-posted one other devotion...but today...I know I need to re-post this devotional from December 2, 2010.

(So...whoever this is for...I sure would love to hear from you!)

G. Campbell Morgan wrote, "Waiting for God is not laziness. Waiting for God is not going to sleep. Waiting for God is not the abandonment of effort. Waiting for God means, first, activity under command; second, readiness for any new command that may come; third, the ability to do nothing until the command is given." (http://www.sermonillustrations.com/a-z/w/waiting_on_god.htm)

I don't know if you are like me...but, at 18 the promises of God seemed more attainable...Now,twenty three laters the "S" once shining brightly across my chest and the super-woman feelings of invincibility tend to fade with endless loads of laundry and ever-pressing twists and turns of life.

Today's Word is Wait.

Nothing seems more difficult than (after hearing God's will) being forced to wait to see His promises fulfilled.

The middle ground of waiting wearies me with an ever-growing list of questions: "What if I misunderstood God's promise?" "What if I messed up or made a wrong decision?" "Did God really say what I thought He said?" "Have I made God mad?" "Why aren't things working out like I thought?"

If you're battling any or all of these thoughts...SHOUT OUT WITH ME TODAY--STOP!!!!!

In order to RISE ABOVE LIFE'S CIRCUMSTANCES, we must learn to patiently WAIT and TRUST the One Who died for us.

I came across a verse this morning that completely astounded me...Look at what God promised the Israelites, in Exodus 23:27-30, "I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land." (NIV)

Ok, at first glance maybe you didn't see what I saw, but check it out...God didn't drive all of Israel's enemies out at once, because the land (the promise) would have been too much for them to handle. The wild animals (the abundance of the promise) would have been too great for them to manage. Rather, God shared that He would drive Israel's enemies out little by little, so they could increase enough to take possession of the land (He wouldn't give them the full promise of blessing until they were prepared to manage, enjoy, and fully handle the ability to "possess" the promise.)

Friends, the same is true in our lives. God loves us enough to cause us to wait, because waiting refines our motives, removes impurities, and builds faith in what matters most. Our accomplishments aren't what matter the most...our end destination of fulfilled dreams aren't what matters most...what matters the most is our journey of building a living, loving, relationship with GOD.

Waiting actually prepares our lives to receive our long awaited promise.

So, as we "WAIT"...

  • Let's NOT ALLOW details or what seems like "Wasted Years" to distract us from embracing and enjoying the journey.
  • Let's REMEMBER our end destination is already decided. God's promises will be fulfilled.
  • Let's RESTconfidently in God's love and enjoy a loving intimate relationship with Him.
  • Let's PURPOSE to ENJOY LIFE even as we wait...knowing that God is giving us our land (our promise) "little by little" so that we are prepared to fully possess it!
  • Let's DREAM BIG, LAUGH OFTEN, and continue to remember GOD'S GOT IT ALL UNDER CONTROL!
PRAYER: Father, by nature we want to live a life free of conflict; You designed us to live in perfect fellowship with You; but because of the curse we wrestle with pride, fear, and feelings of abandonment. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for our sins. Thank You for restoring us to a right relationship with You. Help us to rest confidently that You ARE WITH US. Reveal Your Love to us each day. Help us to RELAX and WAIT for Your Promises. We put our HOPE and TRUST in You. Fulfill Your Promises we pray. And, Help us ENJOY LIFE...even as we Wait!

Who is Jesus?

Today, I sensed God's overwhelming presence fill my heart and mind with a pervading question...WHO IS JESUS?

Honestly...this thought completely disarmed me, paralyzing me from attempting to accomplish anything more, until I meditated upon the truth of my response.

I sensed God gently nudging my heart, quietly encouraging me, pressing me to answer...WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?

In Matthew 16:13-15, "When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
(NIV)

READY FOR SOME REAL TRANSPARENCY?

Most often I find myself answering the same as Peter, yet if I'm not careful, I can completely miss the power of that revelation.

Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

But today, as I contemplated my own response...thoughts bigger than my own aroused my faith!!! The revelation of that truth stirred my soul. A ever pressing love dominated my thoughts and compelled me to relentlessly pursue the application of that revelation!

The Spirit of God compelled a deeper examination of my heart...Does religious tradition cause me to miss the power of the cross? Does my familiarity with the gospel message dull my senses and render my faith ineffective? Could it be I am so acquainted with the work on the cross that the assurance of my beliefs neutralizes my passion and nullifies the power of my conviction?

My only response...Father, forgive me for forgetting the truth of WHO JESUS IS! For give me for becoming lukewarm...for running after so many things that turn my attention from the powerful truth that Jesus is the MESSIAH...Immanuel...He tore the temple veil and forever bridged the gap separating man from You. He spoke peace to troubled waters. Healed the afflicted. Shook the foundations of religious traditions that missed the heart of Who You are. He overturned money tables. Raised the Dead. Forgave the sinner. Restored the broken. Strengthened the weary. He is the Resurrection of all life. The Lamb of God. Our Hope!!!

Friend, I do not want to miss the truth or the power of Peter's revelation..."YOU are the CHRIST! THE SON of the LIVING GOD!"

That means He is powerful enough to heal our broken relationships. He holds our healing in His hands. He is moved with compassion and triumphs over our adversity. He alone expels darkness from our life. His grace is evidenced in the very breath we just breathed.

AND...His mission remains the same as 2000 years ago!

In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (NIV)

He is IMMANUEL...GOD WITH US! Today, may we walk in the power of that revelation and take every concern to the Author and Finisher of our faith! AMEN!

Jesus' Mission

As we enter into this week celebrating GOOD FRIDAY and RESURRECTION SUNDAY…My heart stirs at the thought of God’s great love, sacrifice, and imminent return!

He really is returning! He really is alive! AND...He really is for us!!!

Recently, God put His finger back on my ever spinning world and settled my feelings of restlessness and hushed my ever rustling doubts. So, over the next week, I'm going to share simple thoughts surrounding Jesus' life and mission (in an attempt to help us clear our minds from all fear and sense a deeper appreciation from the completed work of the cross!)

Today's thought:  JESUS' mission was to seek and save that which was lost; Jesus said so in Luke 19:10 , "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."  (NIV)

Jesus heart demonstrated the love of the Father. He didn't seek out the spiritually elite. He resisted religious piety. Instead, Jesus sought to fellowship with the weary, the broken, the sick. (This truth helps to give me HOPE!)

"When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."  (Matthew 9:11-13, NIV)

Friends, those of us who are broken, weary, and wounded...those of us who need unconditional love, hope, and forgiveness...can rest in the good news that Jesus is near and His loving kindness continue to draw us. His love calls us to simply confess our sins, to turn from sins, and to turn towards Him. His forgiveness is a free gift offered to us in Christ's sacrifice. God is still in the business of restoring. He still seeks after the lost!

Today, I want to press in and make sure there is nothing between me and Him. As I do this simple practice, I hope you will join me. Here are a few simple questions to reflect on:
  1. Is there anything creating a distance in our lives or keeping us from living in an intimate relationship with Him?
  2. Is there sin in our life needing confessed?
  3. Are there any doubts we've entertained that distort the truth of WHO HE IS?
Let's keep it simple and spend some time to confess the areas of our life that have gotten off-track from God's mission.

In my upcoming book, there is a phrase that God gave me to write that runs through my head constantly:

"God’s love is more tender than a mother’s, more faithful than a brother’s, and more intimate than a lover’s. His love crossed the battlefield of pain, traversed the trenches of indifference and pride, and stretched his arms wide, nailing the weight of our sin to its final death."

Be encouraged, God's love for us NEVER FAILS!

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your love. Thank You for Your forgiveness. Use our life to glorify You! We give ourselves to You unconditionally. Thank You for calling us and restoring us to a right relationship with You! Blessed BE YOUR NAME! AMEN!

Do Your Shoes Need Switching?

Ok...I have to tell you a funny story. Yesterday I went back to work with Greg. It was a mad dash to get the kids lunches packed, drive Courtney to school, write my blog, and get ready to go marketing and be at my first appointment an hour away from my home by 9 AM.

In my mad dash I took off running in my high heels. Hang on...it gets better. I kept telling my husband, man theses shoes are uncomfortable. The leather really must need stretched out...but I pressed on. My shoes squeezed my foot, made a squeaky kind of sound each time I took a step. I thought to myself, Man...I don't remember these being so uncomfortable...I must be retaining water.

Finally about 2 hours into my day (while standing in an elevator) I decided to take my shoe off and quickly stretch it out with my fist to help make it more comfortable.

As I stood on one foot, I lifted my shoe to my face only to realize my shoes were on the wrong feet. LOL. LOL. LOL.

Now, there are a lot of spiritual applications I could make from this scenario...but immediately God prompted my heart (after my outburst of laughter) that it is painful to wear something in a way He never intended.

You see, my dear friends, He has designed us with a specific and unique make up. Ephesians 2:10 says, "We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared long in advance for us to do." When we try to imitate others, or model our lives after their missions...well...it just doesn't work. When we take on tasks we were never designed to wear...it becomes painful.

This week, I have spent a lot of time evaluating what God has called me to and what I have taken on myself. I want to encourage you to evaluate your life purpose...to do that...here are some helpful questions I ask throughout conferences I teach at...

1. What does God desire for my life?
i. What has He spoken to me through His Word?
ii. What has He spoken to me through Others?
iii. What is He speaking to me through circumstances?

2. What gifts has God given me?
i. What comes naturally?
ii. What open doors are in front of me?
iii. What brings me joy?
iv. What do I love doing?
v. What would I do even if I never got paid for it?
vi. What have others confirmed in my life?
After answering these questions the final evaluation comes by looking at our to do list and evaluating whether there are things we need to let go of. (Of course evaluate withing the context of God's Word and His Character...After all we may not always enjoy EVERYTHING we DO...I'm sure Jesus didn't ENJOY the cross...But take your evaluation within context and begin to release unnecessary burdens and activities.)

As soon as I realized I was wearing my shoes on the wrong feet...I made the switch...and YEP...YOU GUESSED it...IT made the rest of my day better.

So, how about it? ANY SHOES IN YOUR LIFE needing changed to line up your life with GOD's MISSION and PURPOSE? If so, ask Him for wisdom to know what those things are and then follow His lead. :)

Have an awesome weekend.

His Spirit Lives In US!!!

Today, as I sat at my computer praying and seeking God, waiting to hear His direction for the day, I began to think of the last couple of years. How in the last couple of years we moved three times AND lived in THREE DIFFERENT states.

While change is never EASY and saying goodbye is even harder, I guess what I realized is that following God's plan won't always involve convenience. (After all, taking up our cross means dying to our "SELF".)

Quite honestly...the last 2 years have been extremely challenging. Friends I thought would stay in touch didn't return my calls...making new friends wasn't as easy as I had hoped...new churches...new communities...new doctors, grocery stores, places, cities, schools...everything new...nothing familiar...lots of loneliness. YET through the process God revealed HIMSELF to me even greater and filled the loneliness and all the empty holes of my heart.

As I though about all of our life transitions I remembered John 16 when the disciples didn't want Jesus to go away. They didn't understand what He was saying. Like me...they probably wanted things to stay the same. Very few of us like "UNCERTAIN CHANGE". But Jesus said it was a good thing he was going away, because if He didn't go away the Counselor would not come...but since he was going away He would send us His Spirit. "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." (NIV)

In Romans 8:26-27, God's Word says, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will." (NIV)

Friends, we may think we are alone. We may feel isolated. In the midst of the darkest season of our soul dear friends may get busy and never call...BUT WE ARE NEVER ALONE.

God sent His very Spirit to equip us, empower us, teach us, and to sustain us. Scripture reminds us that we are the temple of the Holy Ghost! Think about that...The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead now LIVES IN US! WOW!

So today, join me and set aside your fears, discouragement, and frustrations. Remember and hold fast to the truth of Zechariah 4:6, that it is "'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty." (NIV)

Friends, my journey of faith has not been easy. There have been really dark nights where the core of my beliefs were challenged. BUT...this one thing I know...REGARDLESS of how I felt...REGARDLESS of all the enemy's whispered lies (you'll never be good enough...God has forsaken you...you've messed up and missed God's voice) GOD HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER LEAVE ME.

AND...HE WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU.

SO TODAY, let Deuteronomy 31:6 encourage you, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (NIV)
HAVE AN AWESOME DAY...and keep reminding yourself to DREAM BIG...LAUGH OFTEN...and REST KNOWING GOD'S GOT IT ALL UNDER CONTROL! :)

Leadership Means Following

Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33, NIV)

As Christians our ultimate mission is to love God and bring Him glory; we are to model our life after Christ...to love His people as He has loved us.

Yesterday, God kept impressing on me that leaders aren’t defined in the pinnacle of their glory…true leaders reveal their quality within the darkness of adversity. And, it caused me to think: Perhaps the greatest leaders are not the ones with all the trophy's, the one's who hear the most accolades, or even the ones who have plentiful riches...great leaders are the ones who faithfully follow and serve wherever Christ leads (regardless of the cost).

Many of us don't feel like leaders. We often question whether we make a difference for God's Kingdom. We feel the weight of the enemy's disparaging and discouraging accusations but perhaps that is because we compare our life through the wrong lens. The greatest revelation of leadership is found in Jesus Christ, Who willingly gave Himself up for us.

True Leadership is discovered in following after God, by imitating our life after Him.

Scripture says, that Jesus, "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!"

Our mission is to love unconditionally (like Jesus), to serve selflessly (like He served).

Ok. So in comparisons with Christ I know I for one am not there yet. In comparisons to Him, I still lack strong leadership. But I will press on and pray that God helps me to remain faithful...that He increases His power, presence, and favor on my life and through my life...so that many are added unto Him.

Paul continues to write in Philippians 2, "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life." (Philippians 2: 12-16, NIV)

One thing is for certain, we will have tribulation in this world. We will face obstacles. We will experience moments of discouragement...But we are not defined by our "accomplishments" but rather our "faithfulness". Again, Jesus said be of good cheer for I have overcome the world! Friends, we can overcome and be of good cheer (regardless of our circumstances)...My prayer is that my life would emanate the love of God and that my life would count to honor God. So, by the grace of God, I am pressing on...trusting in Who God IS and Holding Fast to His Promises...and one day...I hope to hear well done good and faithful servant.

The world is watching...let's surrender again and ask Christ to make us Leaders who reflect His glory!!!

PRAYER: Father, forgive me for defining my life through a worldly lens. Help me to know Your will and to follow You faithfully. Empower me to love like You loved. Fill me with Your Spirit. May my life glorify YOU! In Jesus name, amen.

Living Our Purpose...Demands Our Surrender

Today as I sat silently before God in prayer I felt God gently nudge my spirit as questions stirred within my soul and moved me to tears.

"What will you give up for me? Will you follow Me even when circumstances don't make sense? Will you follow Me wherever I lead? Will you trust me no matter what?"

John Henry Jowett wrote, "Ministry that costs nothing, accomplishes nothing."

As I sat silently listening I sensed more questions stir within me. Are you willing to die to yourself, your pride, your dreams, your ambitions and surrender them for MY greater plan?

Living our purpose demands constant surrender. A delicate lines exists between faith and works. On one hand God calls us to press on and relentlessly pursue His vision, to courageously fulfill all He has called us to. Yet, at the same time, He requires us to hold loosely to each dream to ensure it doesn't become a snare for our affection.

If you are like me, the task at times seems impossible. BUT NOTHING is impossible with God. The key to faith is trusting in God's abilities not our own. It requires dying to self daily and taking up our cross to follow after Him.

Today, I was once again humbled by the love of my Father. Who gently reminded me..."Julie, you can't... BUT I CAN!" He reminded me of His love with pictures of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection. Friends, we are not alone. Our job is not "to do" but to love. God requires our admiration not our accomplishments. We are eternally loved and empowered by the Creator of all things.

So, I encourage you to join me once again. Relinquish every concern. Cast off every fear and weight. Take up your cross and follow HIM wherever HE LEADS. Let us determine together to declare the words of John the Baptist, "He must become greater; I must become less." (John 3:30, NIV)

PRAYER: Father, fill us with Your strength. We surrender to you all that we are and all that we have. Use us for Your glory and grant us Your favor. May we know the joy and sense the peace of Your Presence. In Jesus name, amen.

Faith Requires Trust!

Ever feel like you're walking a tightrope? Teetering between charging forward (to answer God's call) and cowering before disbelief?

Quite honestly...Serving God means taking risks. After all, faith wouldn't be faith if came easy. If every step seemed secure...if resources seemed overly plentiful...it wouldn't require faith.

The last few years have stretched my faith. There have been moments when I wondered and even cried out loud..."GOD are You there?" "Do you see me?" "Do you care?" Only to hear soft gentle whispers through God's Word. Yes Julie, I am here, remember Psalm 34:17-19,"The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all..."
(NIV) And in moments of great despair, He reminds me of Josh 1:5, "No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you." (NIV)

Friends, our opportunity to demonstrate faith exists only on this side of eternity. One day we will witness face to face the evidence of our faith. Until then, faith requires trusting God regardless of our circumstances and pressing on regardless of our obstacles. Hebrew 11:1 defines faith as, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." (NIV)

I, for one, want to align my thoughts with the Apostle Paul and forget what lies behind me and relentlessly pursue ALL God has for me.

Philippians 3:12-16 "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, (and sisters) I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things.." (NIV)

Friend, GOD HAS AN AMAZING PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE! He's designed EACH one of us with a specific purpose. DON'T GIVE UP! PRESS ON! OVERCOME! Take the risk...Believe God for the impossible. Remember His promises. Hold fast to WHO HE IS! AND ALWAYS...ALWAYS...ALWAYS Dream Big. Laugh Often. Knowing God has it all under control.

PRAYER: Father, fill us with the strength to do ALL You've called us to do. Empower us by Your Spirit. Give us the wisdom to know Your will and know without any uncertainty what You are calling us to do! We surrender our plans, our desires, our abilities...Use them for YOUR glory. In Jesus name, amen.

Hovering Between 2 Worlds

Ever get to the place where you feel stranded? Stuck between 2 worlds? Hovering between what you know and what awaits you in the unknown?

A few years ago my husband and I went scuba diving in Costa Rica...it's a long story...but because of faulty instructions I found myself propelling to the top of the ocean. While the other scuba divers stationed themselves at the bottom, I darted to the top...alone...When I reached the open air, I waited for what seemed an eternity. But no one came. I had a decision to make. I could stay in the open air or take a risk to descend to my awaited destination. When no one came up to rescue me, I decided my best option was to slowly descend (to a 100 ft drop) in order to reach my group. I thought I made a good decision until I got 1/2 way through my decent and realized I couldn't see the top or the bottom. Dark water covered above me...dark water circled below...I was stranded between two worlds. I longed for the sunlight above but also longed to reach my companions below.

My mind raced. Should I go back up? Should I continue my decent?

I decided, Well, I've got to hit bottom sooner or later...hopefully my team is there when I get there.

Looking back I realize how gutsy that was. As a novice diver, I could have easily been caught in a slight current and drifted from my team. Thankfully...when I reached the bottom...my team was there.

Friend...many of us hover in the deep ocean of life...we can't see the top...we can't see the bottom. We often think to ourselves...Should I go back or should I continue on? The truth is...Life is full of risks!

Today, I want to encourage you to NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER COWER to the darkness. JESUS is with you. The key to surviving and overcoming life's obstacles is to know WHAT GOD HAS SAID and then to go for it! Don't over analyze all the risks. SIMPLY OBEY! Press on through the darkness...through all the what ifs...all the unknowns.

For me...When I reached the bottom, I discovered an amazing world of underwater marine life and thankfully met up with my teammates. Thankfully, I arrived where I was suppose to be and enjoyed a day of incredible discovery.

Friends, enjoy your life journey. Don't allow fear to cripple you from journeying into the unknown. Enjoy the amazing world God has waiting for you.

God promises us that He is with us and will strengthen us. Isaiah 41:10 says, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (NIV)

PRAYER: Father, help us to press on. Empower us to go deeper and not retreat to the familiar and miss the wonderful journey you have prepared for us. Give us the strength to follow you. In Jesus name, amen.

Who is God?

Who is God? Ah...the age old question...the question that challenges our thoughts and stirs the private contemplations of our mind.

Every time I travel overseas, my view on God's greatness grows. Circumstances challenge my beliefs. Daily encounters heighten my revelation of WHO HE IS! His love overwhelms me. His power steals my breath.

Today, I want to encourage you to remember WHO you serve. He is the God that created the heavens by His simple command. He healed the blind. He set the captive free. His power knows NO end.

I tend to live limited by my own imagination. I succumb to fears. I often forget to DREAM BIG or rest in the truth that if God is for me...WHO can stand against me.

How about you?

Do you live limited to your own thinking? Cower to impossibilities? Do you think about the what ifs or if onlys of life or do you revel in the awesome power of God?

Allow me to encourage you with this simple truth..."NOTHING is impossible with GOD." He is able to do exceedingly more than we could ever ask think or imagine...and get this...He is for us! He desires to empower us. He longs to fill us with ALL of HIM. The same spirit that raised Christ from the grave now lives in us! WOW!

I for one, want to quit living a shallow existence of limited faith. I want to believe all of His promises. How about you? Be encouraged. God is with you. He will never leave you or forsake you. So stand strong. Do not fear. And remember...all things are possible for those who believe.

Give Me Wisdom!

When Solomon became King, God appeared to him and said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." And, Solomon answered, LORD God...Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?"  (2 Chronicles 1:7-10, NIV)

Today, I share Solomon's burden and long for God's wisdom. I met so many amazing people on my trip to the Ukraine. I made deep relationships in a short period of time. From the first outreach to my final flight home, God filled my days with opportunity to meet incredible people! I feel so undone! Overwhelmed with compassion. Challenged within the depths of my spirit. In need of God's wisdom.

So...my prayer is the same as Solomon's..."Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead..."

How about you? What burdens your soul? What do you need wisdom for? What causes you to feel "UNDONE"?

Need wisdom for life? Need wisdom for relationships? Need wisdom for overcoming the past? Living in the present? Or planning for the future?

James 1:5 promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (NIV)

Friend, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! GOD HAS GREAT PLANS FOR YOUR LIFE!!! You don't have to make the decisions in your own knowledge or strength. Resist the tendency to do things in your own power and surrender every thought, feeling, and decision to God. He will help you. He will empower you. HE IS REAL and HE IS GOOD.

When Solomon asked God for wisdom, God responded, "Since this is your heart's desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have." (2 Chronicles 1:11-12, NIV)

God always does immeasurably more than we could ever ask think or imagine...So, as I so often do...let me end with this simple word...and encourage you to DREAM BIG. LAUGH OFTEN. And remember, GOD'S GOT IT ALL UNDER CONTROL! (He really does!)

PRAYER: Father, I need You so desperately today. I need Your wisdom. Your Power. Your Presence. Fill Me with the wisdom and knowledge I need to minister and lead Your people. Let my life count for You. In Jesus name, amen.

Love Conquers Fears

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.: 1 John 4:18

Yesterday, I watched the power of love overcome many obstacles. Fear. Drug addiction. I watched God tear down barriers of language, culture, and connect lives that outwardly shared nothing in common.

Antonina is a drug addict. Outwardly...she's pretty messed up. Inwardly...she's even worse. BUT GOD touched Antonina yesterday. AND can I tell you it was beautiful. I watched as the Holy Spirit tore down walls that isolated her from hope. A simple question (prompted by the Holy Spirit) opened the opportunity for Antonina to experience God's love and filled her with hope and life.

"What led you to where you are today? Why did you start using drugs?"

Tears filled her eyes immediately. The one who seemed the least interested in hearing about the gospel. The one I thought was so "high" (from drugs) she couldn't possible be reached...immediately sobered...and immediately responded to the gentleness of the Holy Spirit.

She began to cry, unable to answer my question.

Throughout the conversation, God helped me share about the condition of sin and how HE is the only One Who can fill the emptiness we all feel.

And may I just say...it was beautiful to watch God restore her hope.

Friends, God doesn't wait for us to be perfect before He speaks. He speaks to us in the midst of our deepest despair. Today, I sense Him wanting to encourage each one of us with these words of hope. Joshua 1:3-9, "I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you ... No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you. Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. "

Honestly, we are all Antoninas. We all are in desperate need of Jesus. We all need to feel His kindness and His love. So today, I want to remind you as the Holy Spirit reminded me...GOD LOVES YOU MORE than you could ever possibly imagine!
